HOW DID YOU GET THAT JOB?

NOTICEBOARD I SAW YOU

Name Jenny MacLean Job title Personal Trainer

Company EnergyWise Health & Fitness (energywisefitness.co.uk)

When did you start your job? I started working life as a mechanical engineer and worked for Rolls Royce Aerospace, but I’d always loved running, dance and team sports. Moving to Edinburgh gave me the opportunity to develop a new career from my interest in sport and exercise. I qualified as a personal trainer and Pilates instructor in 2004 and in 2009 became the owner of Energywise Health & Fitness. What does your job actually involve? I specialise in one to one fitness and Pilates training. I also provide nutrition and lifestyle advice, as well as neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) coaching. All in all, the aim is to help people feel fitter, look better and live better. I like to make the process fun and interesting for clients too, as this helps them achieve their goals more easily.

I also work hard to achieve my own fitness goals. I regularly run competitively and finished as the fastest Scottish woman in the 2011 Edinburgh Marathon. I have also been the Scottish Masters (over 35s) cross country champion twice, currently holding their 5K and 10 mile road race titles. Best / Worst Aspects? The best aspect is when a client meets or exceeds their fitness goals and aspirations it boosts their confidence in so many ways. It’s particularly exciting if they have never exercised before, to see them change their lives in a very positive way.

As a keen cyclist, I usually travel around Edinburgh on my bike and have also cycled from John O’Groats to Land’s End with my husband. But the worst aspect of my job is the early morning bike ride to work in the snow during winter! Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Jenny at the start of her career? The advice I would give to a young Jenny and to anyone else hoping to move into the career of their dreams is to stay focused, keep trying and make use of all the support and help from others that you can.

And finally, what are you most looking forward to in 2013? I am passionate about the benefits of exercise and want to encourage more and more people to become fitter and healthier. I am looking forward to helping a lot more people become passionate about exercise too and to achieve their fitness goals in 2013 and beyond.
