10 CHOSEN BY SUSAN MORRISON, COMEDIAN Musselburgh Races

‘Horse racing. Does this count as culture, I hear you whinny? Well, yes, I think it does. It’s a magical day to watch some beautiful art, whether it’s the glory of thoroughbred racehorses thundering past the finishing post, or the theatre of the crowd as they whoop and holler and then sigh as they tear up the betting slips. You don’t have to know anything about the form, or the odds, or the life story of the jockey to enjoy the day. In fact, from what I could tell, picking a horse because you like its name or the fact that it looks cute with its little sheepskin cover on its nose is just as accurate as spending a lifetime studying the pink newspaper.

You don’t even need to bet. It’s just a huge human drama with horses. Look how well War Horse did on the stage. And Musselburgh Races has real horses! What’s not to love?’ Musselburgh Racecourse, Sun 3, Wed 13 Feb. Susan Morrison, The Stand, Edinburgh, Thu 24–Sat 26 Jan, Tue 12 Feb; The Stand, Glasgow, Thu 14 & Fri 15, Thu 21–Sat 23 Feb.
