INTERGENERATIONAL FUN A GRAND DAY OUT Kelvingrove Museum, Glasgow, Sat 2 Feb then monthly
For Wallace and Gromit, a grand day out meant a trip to the moon. Happily, the events team at Glasgow Museums have got something closer to home in mind. Starting this February, on the first Saturday of every month, they’ll
be running free hands-on activity sessions aimed at grandparents and their young charges, many of whom may already visit museums, but feel that the events are just for the young, not the young at heart. ‘We’re aware that grandparents bring their grandchildren along to
family events that we run, and wanted to come up with something that was specifically for them,’ explains organiser Alicia Watson. ‘So we’ve designed activities with an element of sharing involved, encouraging both generations to participate and do something together. Rather than the grandparents sitting at the side watching their grandchildren take part, now they can get involved, too.’
Each month A Grand Day Out will move to a different Glasgow
Museum, including Kelvingrove, Scotland Street and Riverside, where families can drop in from 2–4pm and take part. All the activities lined up relate to objects on display, with ‘Discover the Vikings’ and ‘Discover Clay’ coming up in the first two months. Grandchildren and grandparents can explore the objects together, then get creative and actually make something themselves based on their findings.
‘The idea behind the day is to encourage grandparents and
grandchildren to engage with each other in a fun, informal and stimulating way,’ says Watson. ‘And to use our objects to start that off, whether it’s them sharing stories or experiences with each other or talking about their opinions.’ (Kelly Apter)
