PREVIEW INDIE GAY CLUB YES! CLUB Flying Duck, Glasgow, Fri 1 Feb
Sad that Lock Up Your Daughters is no longer your regular queer fun time at the Duck? Well, dry your eyes and get on your dancing gear: the venue has secured another alternative gay night in the form of Yes! Club on the first Friday of every month.
A relative newbie with their launch event only taking place in
December, Yes! Club aim to provide a gay clubbing experience minus all the italo/disco/house, favouring instead some good old-fashioned guitar bands. DJ and organiser David McMahon explains: ‘Our focus is great music that people actually want to dance to, predominately indie. Anything from Franz Ferdinand and The Strokes to newer stuff like Django Django or classics like David Bowie, T. Rex, Little Richard and Elvis.’ Formerly the regular indie DJ in the Attic at the Garage, McMahon
has been on the decks professionally for nigh on nine years and knows his way around The Smiths. ‘I realised that guitar music was strangely absent from other nights I had been doing around the city, so I thought there might be a gap in the market,’ he says. ‘It’s not rebelling against other LGBT clubs as such, I just thought that an indie club night was really lacking in the Glasgow gay scene. It’s early days for us but once we get a bit more established, we’re going to mix it up a bit and get in guest DJs but we’ll always be pure indie and rock’n’roll at out heart.’
For their February night, expect the likes of Blondie, Velvet Underground, The Cure and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, as well as on-trend tunes from the likes of Friendly Fires and Metronomy. Robert Smith make-up optional (but strongly encouraged by The List). (Lauren Mayberry) ■ facebook.com/YesClubGlasgow
