5 REASONS

TO GO SEE . . . DINOSAUR JR

1 All three of them will actually be there this time Sadly, Dino drummer Murph took ill the last time the band made it to Scotland and had to sit out of their show at Glasgow’s ABC. This time however, the beloved unholy trinity of noise will be live and in full effect as they kick off their European tour at The Arches.

2 Their new album, I Bet on Sky, is pretty good We don’t need to remind you of the unstable and often fickle nature of some musical reunions, but Dinosaur Jr. have outlived their (re)growing pains after reconnecting in 2005, and their latest album is another solid chunk of noisy, melodic goodness, albeit perhaps one of their mellowest yet.

3 They’ve probably influenced most of your favourite bands From Sonic Youth, Nirvana and Pavement to pretty much every Pitchfork-approved shoegazey/ lo-fi/stoner band with a Fender Jaguar, Dinosaur Jr.’s mixture of powerful melodies, abstract imagery and belligerent noise has had a profound effect on many musicians lucky enough to grow up listening to them. But why accept imitations? 4 They have written too many great songs to mention Over the course of almost 30 years all in, and various line-ups, the Dinosaur Jr. discography has produced some of the finest, unconventional rock songs in modern musical history. And their cover of ‘Just Like Heaven’ is pretty badass too.

5 J Mascis looks like a wizard OK, maybe not a selling point for everyone, but who doesn’t want to see a stocky guy with long-flowing white hair spray solos everywhere like he’s trying to kill wasps in a park? (Ryan Drever) The Arches, Glasgow, Wed 30 Jan. I Bet on Sky is out now on Jagjaguwar.
