T his issue we celebrate the 20th edition of our Eating & Drinking Guide. Back in 1994, the guide was a slim, black and white affair assembled by just seven people; today it features over 900 restaurants, bars, cafes and venues, with around 90 people involved in sampling, rating and ranking Glasgow and Edinburgh’s food and drink establishments. Its editor, Donald Reid, takes a trip down memory lane for 20 Years of Yum! (page 14) to chart the changing publication and pick out those establishments that stood out. Elsewhere, festival announcements continue to be unveiled (details about the Edinburgh Art Festival and the Assembly Rooms’ Fringe programme are on page 9). In recent years, the number of festivals has ballooned – our own Guide to Scottish Festivals is a testament to that. Intriguingly, experimental event organisers Arika (known for staging INSTAL and Kill Your Timid Notion) last year opted to abandon the festival format in favour of weekend-long ‘episodes’ aimed at exploring the very margins of film, music and performance. A sign of festival fatigue? Regardless, they return with two rich programmes dedicated to Black art forms and queer culture and much more besides (see Hidden Agenda, page 16). For those looking to give those brain cells a workout, it might be just the ticket.

EATING & DRINKING GUIDE As touched upon above, the Eating & Drinking Guide (and the Scottish culinary scene it covers) has changed a lot over the past two decades. The latest edition includes around 140 new openings in the last 12 months alone.
