HOW DID YOU GET THAT JOB?

Name Amanda Millen Job title Director, goNORTH Creative Industries Festival

Company Creative HI

When did you start your job? 2007 on secondment from BBC Scotland and 2010 properly with Creative HI. So what does your job actually involve? I have the best job in the world because it involves me working with some very talented and creative people from across the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. I work with creative talent in the screen and broadcast industries, developing them and their ideas. We do training, signpost and create opportunities, work with broadcasters and indie producers, and fundamentally help businesses in the H&I take their next step in the professional broadcast world.

Best / Worst Aspects? Best aspects are that I get to travel all over the H&I, experiencing some of the Scotland’s stunning scenery en route to visiting businesses that we’re working with; working with such creative talent, which is humbling and yet very satisfying; working for the sole purpose of helping someone else succeed - a brilliant feeling when it all comes together.

Worst aspect is that this is a 24/7 job. Have laptop, will travel. I’m on call all the time. Yes, I need to get a life! Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Amanda at the start of her career? I’d say, be open to new ideas, don’t think that to be successful you have to head south to London, don’t work too hard, it’s not life or death, it’s only telly!

And finally . . . what has been your biggest achievement in 2013? The thing I’m most proud of in 2013 is the 30 minute programme we’ve just delivered to the BBC. We took on four new directors, worked with eight schools and community groups, gave four people their first television experience and delivered a really entertaining programme. It was hard work though.
