A RIVER CHANGES COURSE

Screening as part of the Filmhouse’s The World on Your Plate season, Kalyanee Mam’s documentary looks at Cambodia’s Tonle Sap River and the various people whose lives revolve around it. As well as promoting a serious eco-political message (the film tackles issues such as debt, international land grabs and urbanisation), Mam’s doc is also popu- lated by scenes of beauty and humour, identifying the river as a source of enjoyment as

well as work. It’s an effective way of discussing an otherwise sober topic, and an ap- proach which netted the film a Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year. (Niki Boyle)
