FOR BETA OR WORSE Re: Steve Mason – Monkey Minds in the Devil’s Time (709, ●●●●●) Yep, great album reviewed by someone who understands Mason’s sensibility. If there was any justice, this guy would be more widely recognised for his huge talent.

I was there and it was not how you portray it, which was pretty much like how you might portray a Kasabian or Noel Gallagher gig. The reason for middle aged men being there I presume is for the same reason I was there – to see one of the most inventive musicians and songwriters of the last umpteen years, who happened to kick it all off with the Beta Band in the mid to late 90s. There was a gratifyingly large outpouring of enthusiasm for the launch of our latest Eating & Drinking Guide on the @thelistmagazine Twitter account. You can read a selection of the best comments below in The Question, but we feel the overall tone was summed up best by freshly- hitlisted Glasgow bar @TheSparkleHorse: ‘Many thanks to @thelistmagazine for the considered and complimentary review. The free booze was also much appreciated!’ One of the most infamous spats
in list.co.uk history reared its ugly head again this month – the age-old conflict between regular music reviewer Malcolm Jack and the legion of diehard Ultravox fans who felt his slating of 2012’s Brilliant was uncalled for. ‘I will now avoid The List like the plague,’ vowed site user William MacLeod on the now 359-day old review, before immediately heading over to Malcolm’s recent five star review of Still Corners’ Strange Pleasures
to huff: ‘It amazes me that Malcolm writes a two paragraph “review” of how much he hates Ultravox, then writes this glowing review of a bad ripoff.’ Things were more positive over on a news story about The Cure, where Trumper enthused: ‘Shiver and shake, I love Robert Smith so much. Sorry that I know it’s weird to say that about a stranger, his art has touched me so deeply . . . Robert you make us all feel like happy balloons.’ Truer words, Trumper.
We’ll leave you with a poetic, almost haiku-like line from Dazzled’s review of The Hive, Edinburgh: ‘main bar as you walk in front door young skinny guy!’ We’ve all been there.
