HITLISTED RESTAURANTS
HITLISTS: A POTTED HISTORY The fi rst edition of The List’s Eating & Drinking Guide came out in 1994, covering around 400 venues across Edinburgh & Glasgow. By edition 5 in 1998 there were over 700 restaurants, bistros, cafés, bars and delis included, and while every venue was clearly part of the eating out scene and had something to recommend it, there was a demand from readers for us to highlight the most impressive places in each category.
Thus edition 5 introduced not just a full colour guide for the i rst time, but also our i rst Hitlists. They’ve been a feature ever since, much coveted by restaurants and much debated each year by reviewers, editors and readers. In 2003 our i rst Eating & Drinking Guide Awards were introduced, picking out from the pool of Hitlist winners nominations in categories such as as Best Newcomer and nd Best on a Budget. . In 2012 a further concept, Tiplists, was introduced to provide useful recommendations s across a wide range of eating and drinking- related topics such as outdoor dining, BYOB and dining with Kids & Families.
