10 CHOSEN BY DAVID CASS, ARTIST Garry Fabian Miller

To think that Miller created Sections of England: The Sea Horizon (a set of carefully composed seascapes) at the age of 19 is perplexing. Though my eye as a photographer is untrained, one can’t help but appreciate, and absorb, the immense competency of these photographs, and admire the artist’s dedication to the long term documentation project. The sequence (which originally consisted of 80 photographs) moves from crisp, clean cut sea and sky, to such subtlety that one has to peer close to even distinguish the horizon line. Some of Miller’s seascapes’ skies seem to have been superimposed, at odds with the expanse of water beneath. Thus, Sections of England offers a suggestion of what was to come in Miller’s career: the camera-less photograph. Garry Fabian Miller, Ingleby Gallery, Edinburgh until Sat 13 Jul. David Cass, The Scottish Gallery, until Sat 29 Jun.
