I DON’T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE 1 Talking about music isn’t like dancing about architecture A curse on whoever was meant to have said that thing about writing about music. Steve Martin? Elvis Costello? This is a talk, it’s about music and it promises to be really quite special. 2 It’s one for those of us who don’t believe record stores are dead Said talk will be given by Eric Isaacson of Portland, Oregon’s Mississippi Records, a vinyl record store (with a few cassettes too) and label with legendary standing around the world. Crucially, the records they stock and make aren’t just limited to what’s new or popular: their range encompasses pre- war gospel and soul as well as local artists like Tara Jane O’Neil and Michael Hurley, and a range of international curios (eg Edinburgh’s Dog Faced Hermans). 3 It’ll be an education The topic on the table will be, ‘Eric’s own special history of underground music movements and bona fide individuals’. Essentially, it’s a record of his own extensive knowledge and listening habits concerning music from the 1890s up to the present day, with a particular emphasis on folk cultures. 4 It features footage from the Alan Lomax archive Always a selling point as far as we’re concerned, the 400 hours of footage that the Texan musicologist and archivist shot from 1978 to 1985 will be culled for much of the event’s backdrop. We’ll witness, ‘folk cultures in full blossom during a time when pretty much no one gave a damn about them’. 5 There’ll be a DJ set afterwards Expect to hear what you’ve been seeing onscreen and much more from the Mississippi stable. THE CONGOS One for the diary for reggae fans, alongside Jimmy ‘The Harder They Come’ Cliff’s date at the ABC on Sun 23 Jun.
