HOW DID YOU GET THAT JOB?

Name: Elaine Craig Job Title: Festival Co-ordinator

Company: Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival

When did you start your job?: I started working for the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival in Jan this year. So what does your job actually involve?: Someone once summed it up as turning excel spreadsheets into festivals, which is pretty accurate. I take the deal that my colleagues in programming have made with the agent/artist and then work on all the logistics to make the gig happen. Contracting the bands, booking all flights, ground transport and accommodation. Liaising with venues, production managers, sound and lighting engineers to make sure they’ve got all the information they need for each show. Booking all backline and any other requests that come in on tech riders. Making sure the venue is ready for the band arriving, load-in crew are booked, stage is set-up, catering riders are ready in the dressing rooms. Quite often I’ll rep the gigs too. And drinking coffee. Lots of coffee.

Best/Worst Aspects: The best bits are quite a long list but to be able to go to work, and for that work to be a live show is completely thrilling. It’s a really special feeling to walk into a venue and see hundreds of people having an incredible night. Knowing you had a small part to play in that gives you the warm and fuzzies. And the people. Definitely the people. I’m lucky to work with some of the best musicians, production and venue managers, crew, runners etc. And being part of a team that has the same end goal of a brilliant festival is amazing. There’s not really a worst bit. Maybe sleep deprivation? Finishing up a gig in the wee small hours and then being back at your desk not long after can take its toll. But I think that’s what Berocca is for? Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Elaine at the start of her career? There are a lot of late nights in this job and not every one them needs to involve rum. I suppose, take care of yourself a bit more. Enthusiasm is good, hammering it is not. and finally . . . what has been your biggest achievement in 2013? It’s not here yet. If I can wake up on the 29th July and 140 or so bands have had a brilliant experience playing at the festival and 300,000 gig goers have left happy. Then I think I’ll have done my job right.
