I f this issue’s features are anything to go by, TV drama is in rude health. Our review of The Returned, which we ran in the last issue, is currently the most popular article on list.co.uk. We talk to Scottish post-rockers Mogwai on page 21 about making the soundtrack to that eerie French series, while on page 23 we preview Top of the Lake, the highly-anticipated BBC project from New Zealander filmmaker Jane Campion. And on page 10, Brian Donaldson pays homage to James Gandolfini, who will be forever remembered for his majestic portrait of Tony Soprano. Still on the telly theme, we couldn’t resist chatting to a few local broadcasters about the hapless DJ and talk show host Alan Partridge, who makes his cinema debut in August (see page 12).

Away from the small screen we’ve been hitting the great outdoors to research Scotland’s burgeoning alternative camping scene. Gone are the days when camping was limited to the choice between a tent and a caravan. Today you can take your pick from yurts, pods, wagons, huts and wigwams. Find out more on page 24.

You’ll notice the pages that follow are almost entirely free of festival coverage; this issue is dedicated to all those events taking place in the next 6 weeks which aren’t part of Edinburgh’s annual cultural extravaganza. For those who’ll be throwing themselves headfirst into the August throng, look out for our three, free festival editions which will be hitting Edinburgh’s streets on 31 Jul, 7 and 14 Aug.

CAMPING The hectic whirlwind of activity that is the Edinburgh Festival is almost here, but we’re well aware that the capital during August is not everyone’s cup of tea. Some among us actively spurn the idea of crowded streets, expensive pints and the aggressive friendliness of flyerers, opting instead for the tranquility of Scotland’s great outdoors. Read our feature from page 24 to find out all the best locations and kit to help you camp it up. 21

ALAN PARTRIDGE The hapless Norfolk DJ is one of the UK’s best-loved comic creations, but what do real radio stars think of him? We asked some local broadcasters to share their thoughts. MOGWAI In advance of their live soundtrack performances to Douglas Gordon’s 2006 art/sport documentary, the band share their insights on French footballer Zinedine Zidane.
