Run by Frenchman Richard Dupupet, the bistro marries the spoils of Scotland’s larder to traditional Gallic cooking techniques. With endive and roquefort salad, confit duck and dark chocolate cherry tartlet with crème anglaise present and correct, this is the sophistication you’d expect from French cuisine, sans pretension.

Saturday brings the black bean feijoada, while a coconut-infused fish stew appears on Sundays.

Fresh artisan bread sandwiches are complemented by sweet treats including sundaes, banana splits and milkshakes.

Step inside and be transported by the aromatic smells and relaxed service. A large coconut and rice flour pancake is sweet yet balanced with savoury spiced pork and minced prawn. From the ‘pot’ dishes, chicken is given a new lease of life, marinated in a chilli and ginger glaze surrounded with a savoury salt caramel sauce.

Provenance is key, with seasonal, local and even foraged food to the fore on a deli display of salads, tarts, cheese and cakes. And it’s just a short walk from the Botanic Gardens, making it a good place to stock up for a picnic.

The blackboard shows a huge list of ‘possible pieces’, but each is made to order so you can have them any way you like. There’s an excellent selection of cakes from reputable patisseries, and they’re launching a picnic basket scheme.
