PREVIEW: MIXED MEDIA SCOTLAND VENICE Venice Biennale, presented by The Common Guild, until Sun 24 Nov

Working across a broad range of media, Glasgow artists Corin Sworn, Duncan Campbell and Hayley Tompkins present their work in Venice as part of the city’s 55th International Art Exhibition, curated by The Common Guild, where each of the three participants will return for solo exhibitions next year. Exhibiting at the Palazzo Pisani as part of the world’s most famous biennial, Corin Sworn’s work moves across three rooms, presenting a socio-historical narrative through installation, spoken word and a collection of slides of objects from her father’s trip to Peru in the 1970s. Her work explores the relationship between humans and objects, and the significance this has in forming our personal and cultural identities. Following her own visit to the same Peruvian village, Sworn fuses the past and present by layering images to play with time and memory. Work on show here includes a sculptural configuration of mosaic floor tiles, film and photography.

Working in documentary film, Duncan Campbell focuses on the

historical representation of certain people and events, and by combining archival material with his own footage, explores the commercialisation of African art, the basic principles of commodities and their exchange, and the reliability and intention of the information presented in his exhibition.

Hayley Tompkins’ painted installation work deals with traditional

expectations and familiarity concerning everyday objects, exploring the relationship between form, feel and function. Tompkins plays with traditional presentation techniques and transforms the floor into her exhibition surface there’s an elemental nature in her work, with suggestions of water and mirrored surfaces that reflect the diffused light within the rooms. A video preview of the exhibition a partnership between Creative

Scotland, British Council Scotland and the National Galleries of Scotland is available to view online. (Rachel Craig) Watch the video preview at thecommonguild.org.uk
