GLASGOW DOORS OPEN DAY Various venues, Glasgow, until 22 Sep, glasgowdoorsopenday.com

Glasgow can at times seem overshadowed by Edinburgh in the history stakes, but Glasgow Doors Open Day shows it has just as much to be experienced and explored. This week-long annual event which celebrates the city’s historical, artistic and architectural triumphs is coordinated by the Scottish Civic Trust and the Glasgow Building Preservation Trust. Running as part of the European Heritage Days, it allows free access to over 100 buildings not normally open to the public, from Hampden Park and Glasgow School of Art to the City Chambers and High Court. ‘Although it is not the case for around 81 buildings, some do require

you to book a place,’ says Ruth Morris, events and development coordinator for the Glasgow Building Preservation Trust. ‘We took 3000 bookings on the first day, which indicates that more people are realising how much Glasgow has to offer.’

If the free price tag doesn’t entice you, there are also various events, tours, talks and walks going on. You can discover Glasgow’s canal routes by water taxi, gain an insight into the artistic genius of Charles Rennie Mackintosh or delve into the rich history of the River Clyde (not literally, it’s a bit cold) on some of the available heritage trails.

There are even some unique opportunities, such as taking part in the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra’s Come and Sing: Mozart’s Requiem (Sun 22 Sep). It’s not a free-for-all, though, so to be in with a chance of taking part you need to visit bbc.co.uk/bbcsso in advance. For all you rail enthusiasts out there, this year marks the first time that Central Station has held tours. And why not pop yourself along to Pollokshaws West, the oldest fully operating railway station in Glasgow? (Katy Spry)
