SUBSTANCE SEVENTH BIRTHDAY The Berlin techno duo Modeselektor help mark the occasion

T he sad news that Apparat, aka German techno producer Sascha Ring, broke his leg after coming off a motorbike almost put paid to the seventh birthday party for far- reaching Edinburgh club night Substance. Fortunately the rescheduling of his live show as one third of the ever-more-popular minimal vocal techno duo Moderat until February next year won’t stop his partners in crime Modeselektor (Gernot Bronsert and Sebastian Szary, above) keeping the date. As Substance co-promoter Adam Richardson points out, ‘a full Modeselektor live show isn’t to be sniffed at.’

After all, it would have been a shame to call off a party for one of Edinburgh’s most enduring clubbing successes, especially as this will be their first large-scale Picture House show following an escalating residency history at Henry’s Cellar Bar, the

GRV and now their current home the Bongo Club, during which time artists as wide- ranging as Speedy J, Lory D, Luke Vibert and Luke Slater have played alongside resident Gavin Richardson.

That the club’s regulars expect diversity is a good thing, because this set will doubtless be different to but just as pleasing as what was planned, with frequent Thom Yorke collaborators Modeselektor offering a sound encompassing everything from influences within hip hop and metal their warm, glitching style.
