14 Nov–12 Dec 2013 THE LIST 111

Name Ian Harrower Job title Festival Producer

Company Chewbanana Productions

When did you start your job? I’ve been involved in events and festivals since 1990. A time before Facebook and X Factor but well after diphtheria. A more innocent time nestled between eye liner, shoulder pads and Teletubbies and Tony Blair. So what does your job actually involve? For the last six years I have been involved with Big Tent Festival in Fife and more recently launched Previously…Scotland’s History Festival. I wish I had stuck in at school more and could be an executive producer type but my role is pretty much making sure that we get the project to where we want to go, safely, on time and to budget. It covers every aspect of putting a festival together. In an outdoor summer festival like Big Tent that means I spend a lot of time planning toilets and transport and waste management and health and safety. At Previously, this means managing relationships with up to 70 partners as well raising sponsorship and finding supporters to make our ambitious ideas a reality.

Best / Worst Aspects? The best aspect is the sense of achievement. There was a moment at Big Tent back in 2012 when the Proclaimers were just about to come on stage. The last of the days sun was dancing on the canopy of the forest and the field at Falkland was just teaming with expectation. I allowed myself a minute to think, “It’s how I dreamed it”, before answering a radio call to go help find a missing child. With Previously…it’s the last night after 3 weeks of events and running around the City, perhaps the smile or the thanks of someone in the audience. It’s that true sense of having helped create something that didn’t exist before.

The worst moment, apart from missing things, is the uncertainty and managing the disappointments, which is always the backdrop to what you do. In a small festival and small business, there is never enough funding and so every day you bring to work drive and energy, you keep going and hope that you have enough in the tank to take you over the line.

Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Ian at the start of his career? Life is a team game. Surround yourself with people who have additional skills. and finally ... what has been your biggest achievement in 2013? Previously . . . is still going three years on. Working with fantastic volunteers and partners and finding the resources to make sure our ambitions and dreams find a wee space to present to the world in November 2013.

Previously... Scotland’s History Festival runs this year 13–30 November
