BOBBY WOMACK FOR CELTIC CONNECTIONS Bobby Womack will join Seth Lakeman, Suzanne Vega, Lloyd Cole and more, as part of next year’s Celtic Connections. In a programme inl uenced by the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, the independence referendum and the 100th anniversary of WW1, the folk, world and Americana music fest will be staged across 18 days.
GERMANY STRAND FOR EIFF Following their more successful outing last year, the Edinburgh International Film Festival have announced plans for some new programme strands to be added for 2014, including a celebration of German cinema. Other new additions include a collection of family i lms and ‘New Perspectives’, which promises to showcase new i ction and documentary i lmmaking.
GIGS PLANNED TO CELEBRATE ART SCHOOL REFURB After a period of serious refurbishment The Vic, at the Glasgow School of Art, will play host to a stellar lineup of acts, when it (re)opens its doors in the coming weeks. Look out for names including Edwyn Collins, Hudson Mohawke and Shackleton. See feature, page 21.
JAMES BLAKE BAGS MERCURY It was a shortlist sniffed at for being too mainstream and safe, but this year’s Mercury Prize still managed to surprise (at least a little) with James Blake pipping bookies’ favourite, singer-songwriter Laura Mvula, to the post to win the top prize. The previously nominated London-based electronic music producer and singer struck gold with his recent album Overgrown (pictured).
BAFTA SCOTLAND
Scotland’s great and good battle it out
P eter Mullan, Martin Compston, Ford Kiernan and Sharon Rooney are just a clutch of the Scottish talent nominated for this year’s coveted BAFTA Scotland awards. The winners are announced at a ceremony in Glasgow on Sunday 17 November, hosted by Edith Bowman. Mullan and co join the country’s i nest in a list that celebrates the best of the i lm, television and games industries over the past year.
This year’s awards nominations honour the stories of everything from one man’s i ght against motor neurone disease (the deeply moving I Am Breathing) to the tale of a young man who survives a i shing disaster in the beautifully shot For Those in Peril – which leads the race with four nominations.
Kiernan, Mullan and Rooney i ght it out in the Best Actor / Actress Television category, with Compston, Iain de Caestecker and George
Mackay nominated for Best Film Actor / Actress. The Best Director category is likely to be i ercely contested, with Kenny Glenaan (Case Histories), Emma Davie & Morag McKinnon (I Am Breathing), and Paul Wright (For Those in Peril) featured in this year’s nominee lineup. The award for Best Feature Film is also well fought, with Fire in the Night, For Those in Peril and The Wee Man all up for the gong.
As part of the celebrations, BAFTA Scotland is also announcing the winners of the Outstanding Contribution and Film, Outstanding Contribution to Broadcasting, and Outstanding Contribution to Craft awards, as well as a special games industry award. to Television

TALKING ABOUT A GENERATION We’re really very excited about Generation, a mammoth series of exhibitions, set for 2014, celebrating 25 years of contemporary art in Scotland. A slew of the country’s i nest artists, including Charles Avery, Martin Boyce, Moyna Flannigan, Douglas Gordon, Ilana Halperin, Alison Watt, Cathy Wilkes and Richard Wright will contribute to a massive programme of works of art by over 100 artists to over 60
galleries, s, with the majority y of ons exhibitions taking place over the summer of 2014, as part of the Glasgow 2014 Cultural Programme.
