HOW DID YOU GET THAT JOB?

Name Sam Jones Kettle!

Job Title Production Manager/ freelance lighting technician Company Blueparrot Production & Events / freelance

When did you start? It all started at about 14 when I got bored in the usual classes and started doing the lighting for school plays. I went on to study technical theatre in college and when I was 18 I started working in the Venue nightclub. From there I worked in clubs around Edinburgh and began to do freelance work around the UK and then joined Blueparrot.

What does your job actually involve? For Blueparrot I manage various jobs and events as well as working on site. This can be anything from a club night or party to big corporate events. I meet the client, listen to their ideas and then develop them. I’ll do a site visit to work out how I can create their vision and assess any risks or potential problems and from there put together a proposal. On the day I make sure the event runs smoothly and usually do a get-out at some silly hour in the morning! On freelance jobs I can be doing anything from illuminating 40 performers hanging off a crane at Stockton Arts Festival to going on tour with the Singing

Best aspect Working with and meeting amazing artists and performers: personal highlights are Deadmau5, Green Velvet and Nicky Blackmarket. The creativity in designing for events, working with different clients in different spaces every day and doing something new each time. My idea of hell would be to do the same thing every day! Worst aspect Those jobs where you’re working back-to- back 22-hour shifts!

Advice for someone starting out You have to have the passion for it as the hours are long and it’s not the highest paid job in the world but it’s definitely rewarding. It’s all about creativity, even with the oldest equipment and the smallest of budgets you can make something look great. Biggest achievement in 2013 Production managing the first Edinburgh Zoo Nights event, the after-hours party in the zoo. It was the first time the zoo had done anything like this and the event went on to win an award at the Scottish Event Awards. Just want to thank Peter Snow for pushing me at school: it worked!
