N.Y.E. + N.Y. DAY SUGGESTIONS How will you spend the last hours of 2013? Or the rst hours of Ne'erday? We’ve got 12 ideas . . .

1 WATCH SOME POP LORDS The former assistant editor of Smash Hits (that’s Neil Tennant, fact fans) and Chris Lowe bring their deadpan, yet hi-NRG synth-pop to the capital. Concert in the Gardens, with the Pet Shop Boys, and

support from The 1975, Nina Nesbitt and The 10:04’s, Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh, Tue ue 31 Dec.

Whirl away the i nal day of the year on Edinburgh’s razzle-dazzle e pop-up ice rink. Ice rink, Princes Street Gardens, Edinburgh, until Sun 5 Jan.

2 MAKE LIKE BAMBI ON ICE 3 CUT A RUG AT A CEILIDH Watch the i reworks in the warmth h via big screens or the VIP lounge before Ceilidh Stomp and the soul band Hidden Agenda i re up the dancel oor with music to see in the bells. Ceilidh at The Assembly Rooms, Edinburgh, Tue 31 Dec.

4 SINGALONG WITH BING Two friends put on a show in a Vermont inn with hilarious results. A classic festive musical, White Christmas is ‘full of tap dancing and laughter’ with Irving Berlin’s classic hits performed here by a cast of over 30 (sadly not the real Bing) and a 17-piece orchestra. White Christmas: The Musical, Festival Theatre, Edinburgh, until Sat 4 Jan.

JOURNEY IN EDINBURGH'S OLD TOWN

5 GO ON A CULTURAL They’ve danced up trees, tackled events surrounding 9/11 and cavorted in castles: sufi ce to say, Dundee-based dance troupe Smallpetitklein

don’t so much think outside the box, as build a d new one entirely. Which makes them a perfect n addition to Edinburgh’s already bursting, and a no less inspired, New Year’s Day programme, n Scot:Lands. Essentially a magical mystery S tour of Edinburgh through the city’s Old Town, t Scot:Lands consists of nine ‘worlds’, each one S created by some of Scotland’s top musicians, c dancers and artists, and performed in unique d spaces in the city. The premise is simple yet s intricate, with audiences encouraged to collect i their Scot:Lands map from the Home:Land that t is the National Museum of Scotland on Wed 1 i Jan, and join in the fun. Highlights of the day will J undoubtedly include Shadow:Land, a bespoke u production of Cora Bissett’s award-winning p multidisciplinary show Whatever Gets You m Through the Night; Lobster:Land, curated by the T mighty King Creosote, joined by Withered Hand; m and NewFOUND:Land from the BAFTA-winning a art collective FOUND, with RM Hubbert and a Edinburgh-based singer-songwriter Emily Scott E joining them for good measure. j

Although still a work in progress, Smallpetitklein’s artistic director Thomas S Small is certainly thinking big with his strand, S Wander:Land. ‘As soon as we heard about this W idea of putting people into interesting spaces i
