TECHNO ANIMAL FARM Sub Club, Glasgow, Sun 29 Dec

There’s always a strange hinterland between Christmas and Hogmanay. However, Animal Farm is among a handful of clubs deciding to reclaim this clubbing limbo, throwing their ninth birthday party. ‘The last few years have been a sell-out so the atmosphere in the club is crazy,’ explains resident Quail. ‘Everyone is still buzzing from Christmas so it’s really unique.’

And they’ve booked one of their favourite DJs for the event. ‘We first had Marcel Dettmann [pictured] back in 2008. Originally drawn in by his productions, we were immediately gripped by his DJ style. Since then he has become one of the biggest names in techno and one of the faces of the Berghain-backed resurgence of techno over the last few years and a massive influence on us.’

Dettmann is famed for his commitment to electronica and a selection

of dark moody productions released on Ostgut Ton and his own MDR label. ‘I would say it’s electronic music in the widest sense of the words,’ says Dettmann. ‘It all started in the late 80s when I was listening to synth pop bands like Depeche Mode and the Cure, and later on to EBM bands like Front 242 and Nitzer Ebb.’ For those who haven’t experienced the pleasure of Animal Farm

before, this techno night has its sound rooted in the clubs of Detroit and Germany. So Dettmann should be the perfect guest for their birthday celebrations. ‘I think Berlin is a special place for artists in general, for visual artists and musicians alike, because here it is still possible to be uncompromising in what you are doing. It’s not primarily about the money involved, that’s why I think that the city has this reputation of the centre of electronic music, techno or art in general.’ (Henry Northmore)
