INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY Marking IWD with everything from Parkour to breakfast
B oth Glasgow and Edinburgh are honouring International Women’s Day with some excellent events on and around the big day of Saturday 8 March. In the west, explore the lives of ladyfolk from thousands of years ago with a talk on Women in Ancient Egypt (Glasgow Museums Resource Centre, Sat 8 Mar) or take in Illuminated Letters (Glasgow Women’s Library, Sat 8 Mar), an exhibition inspired by Niki de Saint Phalle’s correspondence to lost heroines.
At the Virginia Gallery, Hazel Gore and Catriona Ruth Paterson present ‘Her Story’ (Sat 8–Sat 22 Mar), an exhibition of archetypical depictions of women in storytelling, from virgin to mother and goddess.
You can get your heart racing with the Glasgow Parkour Girls and their Parkour Clamjamfrie (various venues, Sat 8 & Sun 9 Mar) before the launch of 21 Revolutions, a publication that celebrates the history of Glasgow Women’s Library (GWL, Sat 8 Mar). A week later, lady collective TYCI get in on the action with an IWD club night special (Bloc, Sat 15 Mar).

In Edinburgh, start the weekend off at the International Women’s Day Breakfast, with speaker Tricia Marwick, live music and networking (Braid Hills Hotel, Fri 7 Mar). The Scottish Women’s Convention was set up to ensure women’s voices were being heard, and their IWD event features guest speakers and debate (Scottish Parliament, Sat 8 Mar). Meanwhile, theatre lovers can participate in discussion, open forums and staged readings, centred on women in Scottish theatre (Traverse Theatre, Sat 8 Mar). On the same day at the Filmhouse you can see the UK premiere of Eufrosina’s Revolution, a documentary about the Mexican activist Eufrosina Mendoza (pictured). Further afield, there’s also the popular Dundee Women’s Festival (various venues, Sat 1–Mon 24 Mar), which promotes equality and creates opportunities for women through arts and culture, this year with a ‘Women’s Rights, Roles and Responsibilities’ theme.
