CLUBS Jon Hopkins

You’d be forgiven for thinking Hopkins is a folkie type, following his Mercury-nominated collaboration with King Creosote. In fact he’s a brilliant techno producer and DJ, which is why we’re massively looking forward to this Glasgow set. See preview, page 42. The Art School, Glasgow, Fri 28 Feb.

FILM Under the Skin

Pop music’s reigning queen (sorry Madonna) has a contradictory element common to many highly regarded artists. For Mrs Carter, it’s being held up as a feminist icon while simultaneously reinforcing gender stereotypes with many of her lyrics and music videos. On the other hand, she is also the fantastically talented R&B empress behind ‘Crazy in Love’, ‘Single Ladies’ and the recently released ‘XO’. Have a read of our feature on page 66 if you need help deciding which side of the Beyonce debate you’re on. The Hydro, Glasgow, Thu 20 and Fri 21 Feb. We’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of this Michel Faber adaptation since Scarlett Johansson was spotted filming in the Highlands. Now it’s here, in all its weird, dark, supernatural glory. See feature, page 12, and review, page 55. GFT, Glasgow, Sun 2 Mar. Selected release from Fri 14 Mar.
