Various venues, Dundee, until Sun 27 Jun.

BOOK EVENT WEE WRITE! FAMILY DAY Mitchell Library, Glasgow, Sat 8 Mar

After almost a decade of Aye Write!, this established Glasgow books festival has now spawned Wee Write!, a debut spin-off for children, schools and families.

Thousands of children will take part across the festival (which runs from Wed 5–Fri 14 Mar) and with all manner of screen-shaped distractions around these days, it’s a relief to know that such events can still draw in a young generation of readers.

‘We’ve certainly noticed no reduction in the interest of reading among children, and to see kids at live author events with books in their hands, you can really feel the excitement,’ notes Karen Cunningham, Aye Write! director and Glasgow’s head of libraries. ‘The level of demand this year for our children’s book events has outstripped anything we’ve ever done before.’ Much focus of Wee Write! will be on the family day, which takes

place at the Mitchell Library on Sat 8 Mar. Among the treats in store are events celebrating Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Elmer the patchwork elephant, while Tom Palmer will try to get everyone concentrating on the Rugby Reading Game. Debi Gliori (pictured) shows up with What’s the Time Mr Wolf?

(for everyone’s information, that one runs from 11am till noon), while for older kids, the Metaphrog duo will be on hand to conduct a comics workshop.

‘We have chosen the best authors and most exciting and entertaining events to match a range of ages and interests,’ says Cunningham. ‘Wee Write! is a fantastic opportunity for Scotland’s kids to be at the heart of this year’s festival and to engage with the very best children’s authors.’ (Brian Donaldson)
