This is the setting for Stephen Jeffrey’s historical romp The Libertine, made famous through the film starring Johnny Depp and John Malkovich. Playwright, poet, courtier and rake, the eponymous Libertine, John Wilmot, the Second Earl of Rochester, was a notorious figure and a rock ‘n’ roll celebrity of his age.
Funny, rude, risqué and a bit outrageous, Dominic Hill’s immersive production promises visual flair, grand theatricality, impressive spectacle and lavish and flamboyant costumes. Aye Write! Glasgow’s Book Festival opens at the Mitchell Library on Fri 4 Apr with an evening of music, memories, tribute and celebration. Highlights include Glasgow Celebrates Mandela with Mara Louw, the South African singer who danced with Nelson Mandela in George Square; Remembering Iain Banks, including readings and reminiscence from those who knew him; an hour with DJ Vic Galloway featuring live music from James Yorkston; and Reporting the Games, a fresh look at a year of sport in Glasgow from writers’ perspectives.
