Name Caroline Fraser Job title Roxy Manager

Company Assembly Roxy

When did you start your job? I started this job at the end of October last year so it’s a relatively new position for me. Over the past few months, I’ve been encouraging more year-round events into our spaces. It’s been brilliant to see the building being used more frequently and we’ve had some great events recently such as the National Theatre of Scotland, the University of Edinburgh Savoy Opera group doing the Mikado and an Edinburgh Film Guild screening with live score.

So what does your job actually involve? This is one of those jobs where I do a bit of everything in the venue. I take the initial enquiries and then see this through from the first show-round until the end of their booking. This includes organisation of the events, looking after the building when the events are running as well as other marketing and admin that goes along with the day-to-day running of the venue. We have three main spaces, including a beautiful main hall, a 200 seat theatre and snug bar with other breakout space for events. We have a production manager and finance manager who are in Edinburgh, but a lot of my brilliant team are London-based. In the Fringe Festival, we have three venues running in the building so I can see I’m going to be busy in the summer! Best / worst Aspects? The building is an old church dating back 100 years so there is a lot of ongoing maintenance to do and there is always something to keep me occupied. The best aspects are that I love meeting new clients and have met so many different people already ranging from theatre company members, couples looking to get married somewhere different and others looking for a unique and special venue for an event or party. The job is so varied, so I thrive on that.

Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Caroline at the start of her career? I started working in box office at the Lemon Tree when I was at university in Aberdeen and was hooked working in venues / the arts from then on. I’d say to be confident in your abilities, you can work your way up the ladder if you are passionate in what you want to do and generally work hard. But also play hard -- socialising and networking is important too.

And finally . . . what are you most looking forward to in 2014? I’m looking forward to seeing more events at the Roxy in 2014. As well as developing a programme of regular events, you’ll see more regular theatre performances and more improvements to our Upstairs space, making it a great venue for local and touring performances. Some of the forthcoming events such as the Living Room gigs and Tradfest performances will be great to host.
