10 YEARS OF HYPERDUB

Hyperdub is a genuinely inno- vative label. Something that probably comes from the fact that its founder, Glasgow- bred Steve Goodman aka Kode9 is an innovative DJ, producer and, more surpris- ingly, academic. He’s earned a PhD in Philosophy and has conducted research in the field of sonic warfare. It’s this context which makes it easy to see how the label pushed forward the concept of dubstep back in 2004, when it released Burial’s self-titled debut. Since then it’s launched artists Dark- star and Ikonika, and is now embracing the likes of Laurel Halo and Hype Williams. Goodman summarises the key elements of the label on its tenth anniversary. . .

How did it all begin? As an online music magazine in 2000, which became a label in 2004 in order to release my own music.

How has the Hyperdub vision changed over the years?

It broadened out in order to release other people’s music. After starting as a leftfield dubstep label, it now covers a much wider range. What’s been the key to the label’s success?

Burial. And an open mind.

How would you sum up the label’s sound today? There are several sounds, hence why we’ve decided to do four an- niversary compilations this year.

What developments in dance music have most interested you over the past ten years?

Early dubstep, grime, UK funky and footwork.

What’s been one of your favourite moments with Hyperdub so far? Every day is a celebration.

What can we expect over the next ten years?

A 15th anniversary in 2019. (Interview by Rosie Davies) Kode9 plays at 10 Years of Hyperdub alongside Ikonika and Scratch DVA at Sneaky Pete’s, Edinburgh, Thu 17 Apr; Art School, Glasgow, Fri 18 Apr.
