RECORD STORE DAY The best of this year’s RSD in Glasgow and Edinburgh

P ublic Enemy linchpin Chuck D is this year’s official Record Store Day ambassador, and, as with Ozzy Osborne, Jack White and Iggy Pop before him, we’re not going to argue the finer points of this modern retail concept with such a titan. Rather, let us salute RSD as a fine excuse to celebrate Scotland’s record shops and the treats they have in store not to mention some fab Scottish RSD releases, including the Twilight Sad’s incredible 14 Autumns and 15 Winters on double vinyl, a white vinyl pressing of the new Bis album, data Panik etcetera (see review, page 73), plus a reissue of the debut and only album from Life Without Buildings.

Kicking off the pop-shop action in Glasgow, Monorail (pictured) unleashes an aural triple- threat thanks to live instores from Sacred Paws, Los Tentakills and Ubre Blanca, plus DJ stints from Adele Bethel, Ladytron’s Helen Marnie and Rafla (the Hot Club). Oh and they’re getting the cakes in. Up on Dundas Street, Love Music pays host to no fewer than 13 live bands (many of whom have RSD releases), including the Pictish Trail,

Stanley Odd, Fatherson, Blood Relatives and Electric Honey’s Harry and the Hendersons and Schnarff Schnarff. Check out Mixed Up Records (Otago Lane) and Rubadub (Howard Street) for more RSD treats.

Edinburgh’s RSD party meanwhile sees VoxBox host live sets from LAW, Tuff Love and more plus at noon they host a chat between Simon Goddard and Ian Rankin about Goddard’s new Postcard Records book, Simply Thrilled. Underground Solu’shn welcomes Craig Smith (6th Borough Project), S-Type (LuckyMe/Phuturelabs) and Wounded Knee among others, while Avalanche has Star Wheel Press playing instore. Coda stages a King Eider performance (see review, page 74), and Electric Circus throws an RSD party, with free entry if you show a receipt for an RSD purchase. It’s also worth a trip to the vinyl paradise that’s Europa in Stirling for live sets, street theatre and comedy. Who says Record Store Day’s not for everyone? (Nicola Meighan)
