Joining a growing trend for fusing traditional Scots folk tunes and instrumentation with contemporary styles from hip-hop to techno, Grousebeater Soundsystem formed in early 2009 in the Highlands. Since then, they have made numerous festival appearances, gradually converting more and more to their B’n’B (that’s Bodhran and Bass) sound.

UMBERTO Horror film soundtrack fanatic Umberto, known to his mum as Matt Hill, brings his brand of synth-based spookiness back to Scotland. Using an analogue synth as his weapon of choice, Hill crafts ominous soundscapes in the vein of the masters of the genre John Carpenter, Goblin and Fabio Frizzi and contemporaries like Zombi and Gatekeeper. Last year’s Confrontations LP and his new EP Temple Room have also seen him embracing Italo-disco influences, so there may well be some dancing involved. Banshee Labyrinth, Edinburgh, Thu 1 May, and Nice ’n’ Sleazy, Glasgow, Fri 2 May.
