STREET PARTY PLATFORM 18 West Street, Glasgow, Sat 31 May

Platform 18, the Glasgow club event, shares its name with the Arches-based theatre award, the latter of the two being named in honour of the imagined 18th platform at Central Station above the venue itself and the strange lands it might lead to. In the case of residents Ivan Kutz and Niz’s unique club event, it takes us to the ground beneath two railway bridges on the south side of the Clyde, just outside West Street subway station, and one of Glasgow’s most distinctive parties. ‘We play dub techno, minimal, deep house and tech house,’ says Kutz, who used to run techno night

Seasons at Paisley’s Club 69 and the Glasgow-based Nomad, ‘but our main focus is creating a grooving daytime party feel, with the odd banger thrown in for good measure. The venue and the atmosphere it creates is what makes our party different, the old railway bridges with the high walls feel secure but keep an outdoor element.’ The site wasn’t much to look at when they found it, he says, but with the permission of the city council they’ve done voluntary clean-ups and now Network Rail are renovating the bridges overhead. Part of the P18 experience is booking good, up-and-coming international DJs, and this month’s guests are

resident at Ibiza’s Enter Bella Sarris and the Berlin-based DeWalta, a regular through the P18 speakers. Intimate and never oversold, the all-day event is, says Kutz, a democratic affair which intentionally puts the DJ on the same level as their crowd. (David Pollock)
