ANNUALE 2014 Dane Sutherland is a committee member at the Embassy Gallery and has helped curate the gallery’s Annuale, a DIY art festival that celebrates grassroots activity in Edinburgh. How are you feeling about the Annuale this year? Electrified. How many artists are participating? There are over 30 events in the programme with around 75 listed artists / collectives appearing throughout. All of the activities take place in Edinburgh, sharing the work of local, national and international artists. Are any particularly unusu- al spaces going to be used as exhibition venues? Aye, there always is. A lot of domestic spaces as well as public areas of the city that will offer some chance encounters with artworks. I am looking forward to seeing a film screening at the tenpin bowling venue at Fountainpark. It is often the case that these places turn out to be hidden gems for showing work that may not have otherwise been used for such a purpose it really is a testament to the inge- nuity and quality of the Annuale proposals we receive. How is the Annuale differ- ent to other art festivals?  I like that Annuale is a simple invitation for grassroots activity to be cohered into a city-wide festival, a kind-of user- generated approach that allows the festival to have a different feel each year due to the use of diverse spaces. It also seems to bring into focus a lot of personal relationships and collaborations between artists and organis- ers, allowing the programme to develop quite a fun tone, which I believe should be the nature of a ‘festival’ and also for generating great art.
