When did you start your job? Formally, June 2004, but there was a good five years before that when Donald MacDonald (ENF founder and chairman) and I talked and scribbled on the backs of envelopes and napkins dreaming the festival into being. So what does your job actually involve? I spend a lot of time talking to musicians, artists, funders, stakeholders and colleagues so that by the start of each year (that’s right after the last festival has finished) I’ve got a pretty developed outline programme and funding plan to present to everyone else on our small and brilliant team. After that it’s a joint effort. I am lucky and proud to be working with people who are as passionate about this festival as I am. Everybody’s contribution is equally critical to make sure that everything from the performances to the toilet arrangements are spot on.
Best / worst aspects? The best thing is working with dedicated and passionate people delivering a superb festival. Everyone works hard, takes responsibility and owns their work: we operate with minimal bureaucracy and never lose sight of why it is we do this: to create a great festival. The worst aspect – as a festival rooted in classical music and nature writing - is the
challenge of making an impact in a media that thinks the bigger, noisier quirkier and muddier a festival it is, the more valuable it is.
Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Svend Brown at the start of his career? Always remember forget the long game: even the crappiest job or most depressing situation will teach you stuff that will prove invaluable: what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.
