L ast issue we shone a spotlight on more than 25 festivals happening in Scotland over the summer. This issue we look at two of the biggies: Edinburgh International
Film Festival and T in the Park. At EIFF there’s huge diversity: an impressive range
of world cinema that has really come to define the event under the leadership of Artistic
Director Chris Fujiwara, as well as a conscious effort to bring a few Hollywood faces to the Osteria del Tempo Perso
city. This year, that includes a visit from Elijah Wood, who graces our cover, proving his Hobbit
days are behind him with a turn in British 50s-set drama Set Fire to the Stars, the story of poet Dylan Thomas’ friendship with American writer John Malcolm Brinnin. For more on the
most talked about films of the festival and the guests flying in, turn to page 11.
T in the Park is an equally starry affair this year (page 22). We take a look at two local boys – Calvin Harris and Paolo Nutini – and chart their stellar careers, plus we chat to the Pixies
and new kids on the block The Amazing Snakeheads.

Over 150 screenings, as well as assorted on-stage interviews, youth events and parties, constitute this year’s EIFF programme, making it one of the busiest yet. The festival organisers also appear to have taken on board criticisms relating to film obscurity from previous years, with a raft of household names (including Elijah Wood, James Franco, Nicolas Cage and Eddie Izzard) peppering the cast lists. T IN THE PARK Scotland’s biggest music stars (from Chvrches to Biffy to Calvin Harris) rub shoulders with an international array of performers at the largest musical shindig in the land. ARIES SPEARS The comedian, actor and uncanny impersonator learned everything he knows about Scotland from Braveheart. We did our best to re-educate him ahead of his first visit here this month.
