FILM IN THE CITY Get ready for Edinburgh Film Festival with these outdoor screenings

J une is now firmly established as Film in Edinburgh and this year, more than ever, the films and filmmakers are coming out of the cinemas and into the open air.

Nicely timed to counter-programme the World Cup kick-off, the weekend of 13–15 June will see the return of the big screen to St Andrew Square, showing a selection of solid gold classics. The organisers have put together a first-rate lineup, including a double-header of Bill Forsyth’s finest, Gregory’s Girl and Local Hero, and 80s high school genre-definer Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, as well as one of the finest animated films of recent years, How to Train Your Dragon. And cineastes are catered for too, with a Saturday screening of Fritz Lang’s Metropolis in its spectacular Giorgio Moroder-soundtracked 1984 edition. On the following weekend, once the Film

Festival proper has begun, the outdoor action moves to Festival Square with the focus shifting from watching to making. A special covered area will host free filmmaker Q&As and animation workshops, the latter as part of McLaren 2014, the centenary celebrations around pioneering Scottish animator Norman McLaren. Andy Neal from This is Edinburgh says, ‘Edinburgh always has an incredible energy during the EIFF. Film in the City aims to build on that buzz and create some new, exciting, free events that everyone can come along and enjoy.’ Film fans should check the website for the latest additions to the continually growing programme, then pray for sunshine.
