WEB-O-SPHERE DIGITAL DESPATCHES FOR THE TECHNOPHOBIC

for a line in his 1979 song, ‘Bobby Brown’ (forget Ebola, this is hot topic stuff, people): “I can take about an hour on the Tower of Power/As long as I get a little golden shower”. You know what a golden shower is?’ asks an exasperated Klemenn. For all his faults (giving his kids bully-friendly names such as Dweezil and Moon Unit, primarily), we reckon Frank knew his way around damp fetish terms.

Meanwhile, in a rare spot of familial discord down U2 way, The Mother of Bono is deeply unhappy at her wee boy writing a song for her on new album, Songs of Innocence: ‘“It’s pretty excruciating stuff”: you’re damn right son. For once!’

While U2’s new album has been

dismissed out of hand by many critics, perhaps time will ultimately prove more favourable to its legacy. It’s clear that some records are slow-burning classics. In 2006, we gave four stars to Polish Fantasy by classical pianist Felicja Blumental. In January of this year, Annette Celine left us this simple comment: ‘beautiful’. Obviously nagged with a heavy doubt that she hadn’t quite got her opinions across fully, Annette popped back in September to mark this for posterity: ‘beautiful playing by Felicja Blumental’. Case closed.

There’s nothing digital technophobes like more than a spot of good ole fashioned grammatical pedantry. And the heights of pernickety charm were reached by one Ron Clements in his deep-vein analysis of The Judge review. ‘Pet peeve: it’s Robert Downey Jr, but just Downey on the second reference. It’s the first and last name together that makes him a junior. So, after you refer to him as Robert Downey Jr once, using Downey is correct, Downey Jr is not.’ Point having been forcibly delivered, Ron isn’t done just yet. He actually

has something to say about the movie itself. ‘As for the film, good, not great, excellent performances from Downey and Thornton in an unexpected melodramedy.’ Oh Ron: did you actually write ‘melodramedy’?

Two rock legends took it fully on the chin this month. One of whom is far too dead to defend himself, the other alighted himself into sainthood so long ago that criticism from mere mortals won’t leave even the tiniest smear on his Bvlgari 611 shades. First up, Klemenn is taking the late (by 21 years) Frank Zappa to task
