Name Kirsty Johnston

Job title Account Director at LEWIS (one of Scotland’s most successful design and digital agencies) When did you start your job? September 2005, unbelievably! Nine years has flown by.

So what does your job actually involve? It’s such a diverse role but, generally speaking, I’m responsible for heading-up the client-facing account team at LEWIS, for managing key client projects, developing strong relationships with our clients and ensuring that everyone in our business is happy at work and always challenging themselves. One day I could be planning a digital advertising campaign and the next I might be poring over results from our project management system to make our internal processes more effective. Our company motto is ‘we make you look great’ and it’s my job to make that a reality through everything that we deliver for our clients, whether it be a new website or a bit of insider knowledge that helps one of our clients impress their boss.

Best / worst aspects? I love working with creative and technical people and I get a real buzz out of not knowing what each day will bring. I write a ‘to-do’ list at the start of every day and by 9am it’s scrapped as something has happened to change the plan! I’ve always been a very organised person so I suit this type of role as much of my work involves gathering lots of information and interpreting it in the best ways to help our studio, our clients or partners. The team at LEWIS are super-talented and I’m always amazed at what I learn from them. Although I can’t draw or code to save my life, I have a creative mind and I’m quite good at writing copy so I take any opportunity to add my ideas into the creative and technical mix and help to develop really strong solutions for our clients.

I guess one downside is that, because things are continually changing and goalposts moving, it can be hard to keep up and, by the end of the day, your brain is scrambled! It’s exciting though and that’s why I love it.

Looking back, what advice would you give to a young Kirsty at the start of her career? I would say that it’s important to really understand the different areas of this industry and think about which most appeals to you. At university I was convinced I wanted to work in PR but, after doing a bit of work experience, I realised that I craved involvement in the creative side of things. There’s a huge difference between working in-house or for an agency and it’s worthwhile exploring both sides before making the leap. Ultimately, this industry is all about people and personalities it’s less formal than other areas of business and being a bit different and showing your quirks is actually encouraged! Whenever students ask about writing a good CV I tell them it’s all about getting your personality across and appealing to the person reading it. And finally, what are you most looking forward to in 2015? More of the same hopefully! 2014 has been an absolutely incredible year for LEWIS so I’m looking forward to developing relationships even further with existing clients, working on new and exciting projects and, hopefully, introducing ourselves to some new clients too.
