I t’s a new year, and a new look for us welcome to the first new free issue of The List. From this edition, we’ll be coming out every two months, with all you need to know about what’s on in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

In this issue, we preview the Glasgow Film Festival’s 11th programme a fantastic array of films that opens with Ben Stiller in While We’re Young (page 18) and closes with acclaimed Swedish comedy-drama, Force Majeure (page 19). We’ve picked out some of the best films for each day of the festival (page 22) and take a look at its inaugural Audience Award (page 20). We also preview V&A Dundee’s travelling exhibition Design in Motion (page 32), which opens in February in Dundee, before moving to Edinburgh in March (Glasgow has to wait until May). The Slab Boys makes a very welcome comeback too, marking the 70th anniversary of Glasgow’s Citizens Theatre we chat to the legendary John Byrne about the revival of his classic play (page 26).

Elsewhere, we’ve got reviews of the new album from Idlewild (page 72) and we chat to rising

star Maika Monroe about her fantastic new horror flick, It Follows (page 59).

As you’ll see, we’re no longer running listings for events in print, but you can browse our

complete guide for films and events at list.co.uk. We’ll be back in April, with highlights from the Edinburgh International Science Festival (watch out for their programme announcement in February) and a look ahead to this year’s best summer festivals.

GLASGOW FILM FESTIVAL It’s a big couple of months for Glasgow and its reputation as a major festival city. Film fans across the country are sure to the city, as a wealth of exciting movies and events light up a cold, hard winter. As well as glitzy opening and closing galas, the GFF offers strands for fans of Australian cinema (Strewth), horror (FrightFest), Ingrid Bergman (Here’s Looking at You Kid) and nerd cinema (Nerdvana). You can’t say it hasn’t covered the bases. 32

GLASGOW INTERNATIONAL COMEDY FESTIVAL Another stellar bill should get comedy crowds excited, featuring Perrier winners Dylan Moran, Tommy Tiernan and (future MP?) Al Murray. DESIGN IN MOTION V&A Dundee’s travelling design exhibition hops from Tayside to Edinburgh, Glasgow and onwards before ending up at its London mothership this summer.
