SIDE DISHES Chef Martin Wishart, along with partner Paul Tamburrini, have opened up a second venue for The Honours in the vaulted basement of Glasgow’s Malmaison Hotel (above), with a similar emphasis as the Edinburgh original on upscale brasserie food and service. It’s just one of a series of winter developments among the Michelin-star brigade. The Kitchin has knocked through the considerable former bond warehouse walls between the original restaurant and the former Chop Chop next door to unveil a larger, brighter, lighter restaurant space. Up in town, Number One at the Balmoral has also seen a refurb and modest expansion, with head chef Brian Grigor unveiling a new suite of Scottish tasting menus.

The latest Glasgow flutterings include the departure of Butterfly & Pig West from its spot by the junction of Dumbarton and Byres roads over to the Southside, where they’re opening in the former Corona bar on Pollockshaws Road, to be called The Butterfly and the Pig @ the Corona.

News to nibble on

Local home bakers are being urged to recreate an Edinburgh landmark in cake

and help build an edible city at CakeFest, which will take place in the Royal Botanic Garden, Edinburgh, in June. The cake map will be constructed on Midsummers Day, with plenty going on alongside including free kids workshops, live music, food stalls and, yup, lots of cake to consume. We built this city on Arctic Roll. Finally, a sad farewell in February to Edinburgh institution The Engine Shed, which along with its pleasant café, organic bakery and tofu workshop, is closing its doors following a withdrawal of council funding. Linked to the Garvald Centre, for the past 25 years the social enterprise has helped young people with learning disabilities gain skills in a real work environment and supported them into mainstream, paid employment. How about an Engine Shed tribute cake at CakeFest, someone?
