News to nibble on satisfyingly alliterative The Jaffle Joint in Portobello, and The Barrelhouse, which has breathed life (and a bit of controversy over its shanty-chic design) into the former Jock’s Lodge bar. In town, Taisteal is the new venture in Stockbridge from Field chef Gordon Craig, while Contini George Street has just emerged from a major refit with an eye-catching new look and a brand new menu. There’s also a crop of new Far Eastern venues including Kenji Sushi in Stockbridge, O’Kitchen serving Korean on Marchmont Road, and a new Maki & Ramen sushi bar replacing Kampung Ali Malaysian Delight in Fountainbridge.

The Waverley Arches on Market Street and The Pitt street food market were two of the more dynamic food and drink destinations in Edinburgh in 2016, so there’s plenty of anticipation for The Food & Flea Market, a permanent daily street food destination just along from the Waverley Arches by the junction of East Market Street and New Street. They’ve got half a dozen pitches which will rotate favourite vendors from The Pitt, with Knights Kitchen, Rost and Barnacles & Bones among the early starters. The eastern reaches of the city are seeing some new looks, including Italian Dal Patino on Musselburgh High Street, the

Glasgow’s eating and drinking scene is off on a bit of a growth spurt at the moment, with new openings including The Spanish Butcher on Miller Street from the team behind The Butchershop Bar & Grill and Hutchesons, and A’Challtainn Bar and Kitchen in the Barras Art and Design centre more evidence of the eastern end of the city centre opening up. Lively Indian tapas outfit Tuk Tuk opens in early February at 426 Sauchiehall Street, The Hawke Bar and Kitchen is linked to and immediately above Arisaig in the Merchant City, and in the coming months look out for a new place in Finnieston by Nico Simeone of Cleveden’s 111 by Nico.
