GLASGOW INTERNATIONAL The two-yearly festival of contemporary art is back, with a range of exhibitions in traditional spaces, site-specii c installations and an array of live performance art. This year’s festival is directed by Richard Parry (former curator-director of the Grundy Art Gallery in Blackpool) and features over 190 artists – 130 of whom are based in Glasgow. RSA NEW CONTEMPORARIES A key exhibition for highlighting emerging talent, the Royal Scottish Academy’s annual exhibition showcases work by 63 graduates from 2017’s degree shows in art schools around Scotland. Exhibiting artists this year come from DJCAD, ECA, University of the Highlands and Islands, GSA and Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen. Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh, until Wed 18 April.
DEGREE SHOWS Nothing says the beginning of summer like a slew of degree shows. Keep an eye out for exhibitions across the country and go along to see some of Scotland’s best new designers, painters, i lmmakers, architects, animators, sculptors and more. Various venues, May-Jun. DUNDEE DESIGN MONTH With the V&A opening in September (see below), the City of Design is set for a big year. But there’s still several months to wait, so for now get yourself along to Dundee Design Month for a range of events, talks, workshops, tours and exhibitions. Highlights include multi-arts feature Dundee Design Parade, a showcase of work made at the Factory Floor residency programme, and a special programme co- designed by young people to mark Scotland’s Year of Young People. PHYLLIDA BARLOW AT JUPITER ARTLAND Only open to the public from May–September, the annual spring awakening of Jupiter Artland is one of the highlights of the east coast’s art calendar. This year, the contemporary art attraction re-opens on Sat 12 May with a new site-specii c, permanent commission from Phyllida Barlow, the acclaimed artist who represented Great Britain at last year’s Venice Biennale. HIDDEN DOOR The grassroots festival is back in Leith in 2018. While the majestic Leith Theatre will host its packed music programme (see feature, page 36), visual art will migrate to a new venue for this year, the State Cinema on Great Junction Street. COLLECTIVE GALLERY Calton Hill might be a building site just now, but that will change in the spring of 2018, when Collective will reopen the restored City Observatory and Dome, complete with a new exhibition space and restaurant. ARCHITECTURE FRINGE After a stellar second year in 2017, the Architecture Fringe is back for a third edition. This year’s provocation is COMMON /SENSES, and projects may be based around installations, lectures, walks, music, exhibitions, discussions and more. EDINBURGH ART FESTIVAL EAF has just announced its exhibition programme for 2018 and there’s lots to be excited about. Look out for new work by contemporary artists Lucy Skaer (Talbot Rice Gallery), Jenny Saville (Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art) and Tacita Dean (Fruitmarket Gallery), as well as reappraisals of historic artists Edwin G Lucas (City Art Centre) and John Bellany (Open Eye Gallery),a two-part exhibition of photography by Gunnie Moberg (Stills) and much more. OPENING OF V&A DUNDEE You can already see Kengo Kuma’s magnii cent structure on the banks of the Tay, and it’s a beauty – so we can only imagine how much we’re going to love the inside when it opens in September. THE MACKINTOSH FESTIVAL This annual festival is always a treat, but it’s particularly important in 2018 – the 150th anniversary of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s birth.
