PURE

best nights!).

So how do you celebrate eleven years as one of the most credible and constantly exciting techno nights around? Getting Pure regulars

Calton Studios, Edinburgh, Fri 17 Aug.

Pure is an institution in the world of clubbing, regularly gracing magazine polls of the best clubs in the UK. This is the club that hosted Jeff Mills’ first ever UK DJ session and had live sets from the likes of Aphex Twin and Orbital before anyone else knew who they were. But it’s been a bit quiet on the Pure front in Edinburgh of late, apart from the occasional, admittedly top notch, one-offs. Remember the Derrick May/Kevin Saunderson special? I don’t and I was there (just like all the

Brainstorm, The Bill, Rob Dylan and Sandy Paris is a great start. Add to the mix a live set from Cymbol and 3 Sam licence and it looks like it gonna be a ‘Iarge one’, as the kids are fond of saying. But there’s more, in the shape of electro-tech master Luke Slater. When I catch up with Slater it’s 4pm and he’s just woken up. Fair play to the man as he’s just returned from a five-day festival in Holland, but even in his semi-conscious state he’s full of praise for the underground clubbing mecca. “For people in the know Pure’s a really special night. For any club to be going as long as it has and to be going off as long as it has - it’s got to be a bit special,’ says Slater. ‘They’ve just done what they’ve done and kind

of thought “fuck everyone else”.’

Slater clearly has a lot of respect for the Pure way of doing things and judging by his own unique take on dance music, he’s also a headstrong fella who knows what he likes. “Early electro is a big influence on me; most people were interested in Kraftwerk but I was more influenced by Ultravox,’ he explains. ‘I like music with real funk to it, some ballast, some bass, I like rhythms - that’s what gets me going. Although I suppose it’s the harder edge that

tickles my fancy.’ (Henry Northmore)
