STEWART LEE 9/11 and Braveheart given fresh perspectives 0000
Stewart Lee hasn't done stand-up for three years. He's been larking around co-creating a theatrical hit about Jerry Springer and haying disastrous (but seemingly hilarious) telephone interviews with famous film directors. His absence from holding a mic in front of people could well explain why he is doing material about 9/11 (‘November 9: let's take back that calendar‘) as though it happened last week. Though there seems to be little reason why he should even have contemplated a routine about Mel Gibson's peculiar rendition of the William Wallace story. The extremely fortunate thing is that from sources both fresh and tired. Lee is able to spin killer material almost entirely against the odds. After an ear-crunching pre-show jazz discordancy. he enters the stage by dragging on a quartet from the audience to launch some party poppers. But when the music stills and Lee starts. the real fun is only just beginning. Of course. we wouldn‘t expect him to have anything other than bad things to say about Ben Elton, the Diana Memorial Fund and Cherie Blair, but cheap gags are simply not his style. Instead. each carefully chosen line. sequence and pay—off is sprinkled with comedic gold dust. Throughout almost the entire gig. he gently toys with his words, never feeling the need to spit out the lines and during some very long, slow sequences. he refuses the urge to even marginally speed up. Stewart Lee's measured approach wins out every time. (Brian Donaldson) I . .
