REFLECTIONS OF A GOLDEN EYE Tim Abrahams asks David Drummond. artistic director of MIRRORBALL. to break it down for us, fella.

‘Kenny wanted to stage a fight.‘ says David Drummond. artistic director of Mirrorball. ‘But we decided that. given we would be doing the talk in front of thousands of pounds of equipment. we‘d better just stick to talking about music videos.‘ It just goes to show how integral the Mirrorball section has become not just to the Film Festival but to the drama of the festivals in general that Richard ‘Kenny' Kenworthy of video collective Shynola wants to try a few stage theatrics when he interviews local boy made-good Dougal Wilson. Wilson began his career at local ad Leith Agency before turning in award winning videos for the Streets. Will Young and his David LaChapelle/Russ Meyer influenced video for Benny Bennassi.

Drummond has also spent the year showcasing the best music videos from around the world to crowds of stylish Scandinavians thanks to Mirrorball's international perspective (and to be fair. a British Council grant). ‘The Fresh Tracks section. particularly the young guy from Singapore Vernie Yeung. is worth checking out.‘ he says. Although similar enterprises such as Resfest in the States and Antennae in London have been established since Mirrorball broke fresh ground in 1996. its international scope still makes it unique. The Japan section shows video tested to the very limit of its narrative and technical capabilities while an improved Latin American section, in its second consecutive year. shows that the blossoming of its feature industry will be sustained by new talent.
