DAMIEN THE DARING

Tom Dawson talks to the DAMIEN ODOUL. the showcased filmmaker at

this year's EIFF.

Two years ago one of the most startling entries in the EIFF was Damien Odoul‘s Le Souffle. Strikingly shot in high contrast black and white, and powerfully acted by an entirely non-professional cast. this fever-dream of a film immersed the viewer in the animalistic fantasies of its troubled adolescent protagonist. Shattering the myth of the French countryside as a bucolic idyll. and punctuated with images of sacrifice, it had critics making comparisons to Cocteau, Pialat. Bresson, Truffaut and Borowczyk. but it was also clearly the vision of a singular talent.

The thirtysomething Odoul returns to the Festival with two new films, Errance and After We're Gone. Clearing up a common misconception. he says Le Souffle wasn't actually his debut feature - that was the rarely seen Morasseix!, which he made a decade ago. A fragmented and tragic love story between an Algerian war veteran (Benoit Magimel) and his long- suffering wife (Laetitia Casta). Errance is thus the third work in Odoul‘s autobiographically inspired ‘trilogy of the double’. ‘lt's a heavy film, from beginning to end', he admits. ‘I believe relationships between human beings are complex and to express oneself is very difficult. It's impossible

ever to be truly sincere.‘

But After We ’re Gone promises to be a complete departure for Odoul. It involves a theatre troupe putting on a production about Dionysus. ‘For me

it’s tragi-comedy, a burlesque with a surreal aspect to it,‘
