No, you read that correctly. In Fach dress spacehopper race a... o. a... A 0...... a or... sponsorship programme run to aid Guatemalan orphans, the ever-willing general public are being encouraged to pull on their fanciest dress (not compulsory, but it makes for a good disguise) sling a spacehopper between their legs, and bounce all the way up the Portobello Riveria. ‘1 used to have spacehopper races on the beach with my brothers and sisters,’ says organiser Joy Hadden (pictured), ‘and I love fancy dress, and I thought about putting the two of them together - and it just kind of grew arms and legs from there. And if you’re going to do a fancy dress spacehopper race, you have to do it for charity, really.’
Of course, there are some very decent prizes to make it all worth the effort — Blue Bean Café are offering dinner for two, while Finlay Butchers and Kitchener’s Deli have provided hampers for the winner, and there may well be a spacehopper race afterparty on the cards too. Go on. You’ve nothing to
lose except your dignity.
