0 St James Centre The largest architectural obscentiy in the entire city centre. An ugly conglomeration ofshops, hotel and Scottish Office that would be more bearable if it were not so huge. Plans are afoot to link it with a similar complex on the other side of the road, thus confirming suspicions that architects live in a crazily blind world oftheir
o Barclay Parish Church Barclay Place (by Bruntsfield Links) Stunningly spectacular church. due primarily to its huge spire which is visible for miles around, marking darkest student territory.
TRANSPORT
O Buses The cheapest way to travel any distnace in Edinburgh is by the city‘s excellent bus service. The minimum fare is 20p and the maximum 50p, but most journeys will certainly be no more than 30—35p. If in doubt about the fare or destination ask the driver who is always helpful. Have the exact fare ready as no change is given.
Ifyou are living a long way from college and need to travel every day by bus. a student ‘Ride-a-Card‘ is a worthwhile investment. Costing £38.50 a term they can be used on all other journeys and you will soon realise that bus passes are the greatest invention ever.
However, the city‘s bus services are about to undergo major changes. In October, Edinburgh‘s buses will be privatized and services will be run

0 Taxis Edinburgh’s black cab taxis provide the quickets way to get anywhere in the city — they are also relatively cheap. They can be hailed in the street ifthey are free (ie ifthe yellow light is on), or can be ordered in advance by phone. Taxis operate round the clock, although midnight to 3am they are somewhat elusive.
