Fading. alcoholic actress awakens one morning to find herself in a strange room with yet another unfamiliar male figure from the night before. The difference on this occasion is that the gent in question is dead 'l'raditional thriller mystery where the well-acted relationship between Fonda and disabled ex-cop Bridges is by far the most interesting element. The Living Daylights (PG) (John Glen, UK, 1987) Timothy Dalton, Maryam d'Abo, Jeroen Krabbé. 130 mins. 80, Bond is back for his fifteenth official assignment in twenty-five years. This silver anniversary production includes the familiar and by now obligatory ingredients of foreign intrigue, distressed damsels and the evil machinations of nefarious villains. The question then is what kind of impression does first timer Timothy Dalton make on the role of the world’s most durable and conspicuous screen agent and the answer is a highly creditable, ifslightly humourless one.
Underlhe lighweight influence of jolly Roger Moore, the Bond series had deteriorated into something of an arthriticjoke, heavily reliant on the expertise of the backtroom team and death-defying stuntmen. The introduction of Dalton has afforded the makers an opportunity to return to the drawing board and take Bond back to basics. The Dalton Bond is a more flavourful characterthan of late; a rugged, romantic hero, anti- authoritarian, tinged with a streak of self-disgust and brusque to the point of rudeness.
Dalton's interpretation of the character seeps through into every aspect ofthe production which displays
a similarly low key, no nonsense approach. The plot involves Bond‘s attempt to foil an unholy alliance between an American arms dealer, a hired killer and atop KGB general who has faked his detection to the West. Whilst convoluted, it retains a degree of plausibility. Bond's once Olympian sexual prowess is tamed to the level of one tentative romance and the ingenious gadgetry is largely kept at bay. This Bond is expected to use his wits and the available resources and does so with imagination; escaping down a snowy mountainside on the back of a Stradivarius cello.
Villains Joe Don Baker, Jeroen Krabbé and Andreas Wisniewski and Afghan freedom fighterArt Malik head a strong cast of actors who help compensate for the weak showing of the female team led by the vacant Maryam d’Abo and the insipid Caroline Bliss, hopelessly trying to fill the shoes of Lois Maxwell as Miss Moneypenny.
Whilst nothing can tarnish cherished memories of Sean Connery’s animal magnetism and sardonic aplomb, this is one of the best Bonds for some time and promises well for the continuation of the series. Timothy Dalton is quite clearly set to become the Bond for the ’903. (Allan Hunter)

Excellent performances by Ashcroft and Fox grace this ehararacteristically overblown
