Giacomo Manzu Until 3 Jan. At home. near Rome the sculptor Giacomo Manzu lives at the top of the hill, revered by both art world and public in his eightieth year. Though honorary member of the Scottish Academy. Manzu is not well-known in this country. the last review of his work taking place at the Tate Gallery over 20 years ago. Bronze portraits of young girls and cardinals, religious drawings. costume designs for opera and gold jewellery make up this new retrospective exhibition of his work. With some exceptions Manzu‘s work has an aura of living spirituality- down-to-earth and yet transformed. Describing himself as craftsman rather than artist. it is ironically his dedication to his craft which places him in the latter catagory. Bronze Tebe is speckled and a basket of fruit ripe with gold. A Knight from Tristan and Isolde is padded in silk like an astronaut — Manzu has a way of locating the past in the present.
llash- Landscape ol the Vernal Equinox Until end Dec. A small explanatory exhibition about Nash‘s Equinox one of the gallery‘s most popular paintings.
The Terrible Year- 1937 The title of a poignant woodcarving by Ernst Barlach is on loan to the gallery while funds are sought to purchase it. A small display around the sculpture commemorates one
of Hitler‘s attacks on modern art, the Degenerate/1r: exhibition of 1937. Both this and the Nash display make the gallery well worth a winter visit.

The not unhistoric surname Fleming is one of the few remaining hangovers from the influx of Flemish weavers who were invited to Scotland to pass on their skills so as to boost Scotland’s textile industry following the 400 year-old act of 1587.

Turner Watercolours- The Vaughan Bequest 3—31 Jan. January would not be the same without these piercing colours. Visions of Switzerland and Skye. a grey British wash and the famous lightning flash in the Piazetta in Venice make Turner’s understanding of landscape unmatchabie. At the end of January they return to their drawers for another year. so don't leave it too late.
